You deserve to know what’s in your mushroom supplement

Most people don’t realize how much variation exists in mushroom supplements, or how rarely those differences are explained.

Quality Assurance

Our Commitment to Excellence

Not all mushroom supplements are made the same way. They can come from different parts of the fungal organism, be grown using very different methods, and those choices determine what actually ends up in the bottle. Many products primarily use mycelium fermented grain as their main ingredient. In contrast, Real Mushrooms utilizes 100% mushrooms (fruiting body) to guarantee you receive the desired beneficial compounds.

Real Mushrooms is dedicated to providing the highest quality mushroom supplements.
Our rigorous quality assurance program ensures that every product you receive is potent and authentic. Beyond verifying active compounds, we conduct comprehensive screening for heavy metals, pesticides, and microbial contaminants to meet the highest safety standards. We employ a multi-faceted approach to testing, leveraging validated analytical methods to guarantee the integrity of our ingredients along the way. Transparency is key.

Third-party test results are available to view directly on our product pages.

Where quality starts

Identity Verification

Ensuring you receive the exact mushroom species listed on our label is paramount. We utilize advanced analytical techniques to verify the identity of our raw materials and finished products.

Purity-IQ™ Certified Authentic - NMR Metabolomic Authentication

NMR is a sophisticated analytical technique that provides a high-resolution molecular scan of our extracts, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of the entire molecular composition. Through our partnership with Purity-IQ™, an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory, our extracts are compared against a validated master profile of authentic reference materials. Each of our main products features a Purity-IQ™ Certified Authentic QR code, representing that they have been verified for identity, purity, and consistency

HPTLC Fingerprint Analysis

We employ HPTLC to verify that the mushroom listed on our label is exactly what is inside the bottle. This analytical method allows us to establish a unique chromatographic "fingerprint" for reference materials of each species, which we then evaluate our extracts against. This implementation of validated methods is critical for distinguishing between related fungal species, confirming the presence of important secondary metabolites, and monitoring product quality at every stage of production.

DNA Analysis and Screening

Fungal species are identified through the amplification and sequencing of specific DNA sequences and their comparison with sequences in DNA barcode databases. This is achieved by working with accredited laboratories and other industry experts.

Comprehensive Testing Protocols

Identity, purity, potency, and composition

To create the highest quality products, we start with Nammex organic mushroom extracts. Nammex helped introduce functional mushrooms to the natural products industry in 1990, at a time when there were no standards for fungal products.

Over the next 30 years, they initiated many research projects to analyze each species and identify important compounds like beta-glucans, triterpenoids, ergothioneine, ergosterol, cordycepin, hericenes and hericenones.

By using this innovative suite of tests, Nammex was able to create a well characterized analytical profile for each species, ensuring that every batch of mushroom extract meets our high standards at Real Mushrooms. This is the first of many partnerships that have allowed us to lead with expertise.

We team up with incredible manufacturers and third party labs to go beyond the mandatory testing standards. Together, we ensure our practices are compliant with Dietary Supplement regulations (FDA 21 CFR Part 111) to ensure the health and safety for every one of our customers.

Our commitment to safety includes comprehensive screening for heavy metals. We test all raw materials and finished products for common contaminants such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic. These tests are conducted using highly sensitive ICP-MS to ensure our products meet or exceed stringent regulatory standards for heavy metal content.

To safeguard your health, we conduct broad panel testing for the presence of microbial contaminants, including bacteria, yeasts, and molds. The laboratories we utilize use validated microbiological methods to detect and quantify any biological contaminants, ensuring our products are free from harmful microorganisms and safe for consumption.

Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in mushrooms and are used as a reliable indicator to confirm the presence of genuine mushroom material. Through decades of research we have compiled data to provide expected concentrate profiles for each mushroom species we sell. We quantify beta-glucan levels with every lot number using the Megazyme beta-glucan method (K-YBGL) to ensure consistent quality and provide confidence in authenticity of our mushroom extracts.

Secondary Metabolite Profiling with HPTLC and HPLC

The high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods we use are rigorously developed and validated. These methods are used for the precise quantification of specific bioactive compounds unique to various mushroom species.

For Reishi (Ganoderma lingzhi), HPLC methods can accurately measure the concentration of ganoderic acids, a group of triterpenes known for their distinct profiles in quality Reishi.

For Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus), an HPLC method has been developed to measure the quantity of Hericenes and Hericenones, compounds prized for neuro-protective properties.

An amino acid present in high concentrations in several mushroom species. Ergothioneine has potent antioxidant properties and can be measured via HPLC. Our products using: Golden Oyster (Pleurotus citrinopileatus), Maitake (Grifola frondosa) and Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) have the highest concentrations.

For Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris), established HPTLC protocols to identify and HPLC to quantify cordycepin, a key compound characteristic of this powerful mushroom.

For Chaga conk (Inonotus obliquus), HPTLC is used to identify the presence of inotodiol, a triterpenoid unique to this species.

Developing these analytical methods allow us to further characterize the unique chemical signatures of our mushroom extracts, providing even greater insight into their quality and composition.

Top-rated By Consumers

Quality recognized through real-world consumer experience

Real Mushrooms® was rated highly by consumers in ConsumerLab.com’s Annual Survey of Supplement Users, where supplement users share their experiences and satisfaction with products they use. ConsumerLab.com is an independent provider of information and research on health, wellness, and nutrition products, and its annual survey reflects feedback directly from consumers.

Before the lab results, there are people

The identity, purity, strength, and composition of every mushroom are shaped at the very beginning, by where it’s grown, who grows it, and the standards upheld long before it reaches a facility. That’s why we start with organic mushrooms from partners who helped define the functional mushroom category when standards didn’t yet exist. Decades of research, compound identification, and advanced analytical profiling ensure every species is fully understood and every batch meets our uncompromising standards.
