Are you looking for a short but comprehensive overview of the power of healthy mushrooms and what are mushroom supplements good for if you’re going to get on the mushroom supplement bandwagon?
Real Mushrooms founder, Skye Chilton, and Caspar Szulc, co-founder of The New York Center for Innovative Medicine talked the basics of functional mushrooms in their recent podcast interview.
Listen to the full podcast here or read on to get an overview of what these two leaders in the field of integrative medicine discussed.
Some of the main topics discussed and Skye’s paraphrased responses:
Mushrooms are primarily immunomodulators. They have compounds in them that help modulate our immune function to keep it operating optimally. Healthy mushrooms work to keep the systems in our body resilient to stressors. They help our body remain in a steady, balanced state called homeostasis.
One of the greatest potential health benefits of mushrooms like reishi, lion’s mane, turkey tail, chaga, cordyceps, and maitake mushrooms revolves around our immune system regulation.
Certainly, edible mushrooms contain good minerals and vitamins when you eat them. They're also a very good source of healthy bacteria and dietary fiber, which supports digestion and overall health benefits.
Furthermore, they can act as a prebiotic for gut health. But for the most part, the advantages of healthy mushrooms are their capacity to promote immune function and resilience.

When we're talking about healthy mushrooms, we need to remember that there's different plant parts of these fungi. So we have the mushroom, we have the spore, and we have the mycelium.
Mushrooms are very high in beta-glucans and other compounds responsible for the health-promoting action of these fungi. Most mushroom supplements sold in North America are NOT using the mushroom (fruiting body). Many use the mushroom’s root system, mycelium, and grow this mycelium on a grain medium. This myceliated grain is often sold as a mushroom product when it contains no mushrooms. When selecting products, it is very important to distinguish between mushroom or mycelium.
Producers of mycelium-based supplements claim that the mycelium will consume the majority of this grain substrate. However, in our lab tests, we found that there are very low levels of beta glucan, and very high levels of alpha-glucan in these products (alpha glucans are things like starches and glycogen cellulose). These lab test results show us that the grain substrate the mycelium grows on is really not fully consumed at all.
Ultimately, this means that most mushroom supplement products on the market contain large amounts of starch and much lower amounts of beneficial fungal compounds.
That’s why Real Mushrooms tries to educate the consumers as much as possible about what they are getting when they buy our products. When people rely on our products for their well-being, it really matters that we are transparent about the quality and potency.

Here’s a little background into our mushroom growing and supplement creation process.
Mushrooms are generally 90% water weight, and you can grow mushrooms for sale as fresh produce with no problem in North America. But when we're looking at creating a healthy mushroom supplement, this is where the economics of mushroom growing really starts to come into play. When you dry out that fresh mushroom, it is now 10% of the fresh weight.
Ultimately, that means you need to get 10 times the price of that fresh market value to make it economical to produce a dried product. To make it economically possible to grow whole mushrooms for our products, rather than using only mycelium (essentially the “root” system of the fungi that most mushroom products sold in North America contain), we turned to using small, organic, mountain farms in China.
With thousands of years of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as the first country to cultivate these mushrooms over 800 years ago, China has a very rich history of mushroom consumption and use as medicine. They have research institutes dedicated to mushrooms and the most mushroom scientists. Currently, China now grows over 87% of the world's mushrooms.
To learn about the extraction process we use to create the most potent supplement products possible, read our article The Art of Mushroom Extraction: Methods for Maximum Extract Potency.
Mushrooms are bio accumulators, which means they absorb a lot of whatever is in their food source. To begin with, we make sure that the substrate we grow them on is very clean.
As with anything grown organically, proper analysis and testing is required to guarantee the safety and efficacy of our products. All of our mushrooms are screened multiple times throughout the harvesting, extraction and packaging process for pesticides, heavy metals and microbiological contamination, meeting all standards set by North American regulatory bodies.
That's a tricky one. One of our best-selling products is a mushroom extract complex called 5 Defenders, reishi, turkey tail, shiitake, maitake mushrooms, and chaga. These mushrooms are considered some of the best for supporting overall immune cells and wellness.
When you get into marketing, we see many 10-mushroom and 15-mushroom products promoting a “more is better” philosophy. However, the dosage then goes down for each individual mushroom in the product.
Also, there may be certain mushrooms that you don't really need.
The thing with healthy mushrooms is, they're not necessarily something that you're going to feel right off the bat. They're not caffeine, they're not aspirin. It is a product that builds the resilience of your body over time.
So, some people wonder, “What exactly are they doing?” If you’re taking mushroom supplements every day for a year and you don't get sick during that time, is it the mushrooms? Or is it exercise? Is it good sleep? Maybe it is all of the above. It can be really hard to pinpoint.
However, the growing body of scientific research is able to tell us what’s going on in the body when we introduce healthy mushrooms. The turkey tail mushroom is the subject of the most research compared to other mushrooms.
Luckily, the Western medical world is becoming increasingly interested in the action of healthy mushrooms on well-being and longevity. More and more medical researchers are undertaking to validate what ancient wisdom and traditional medicinal practitioners have known about mushrooms for centuries.
As interest in health conditions and natural remedies grows, dietary supplements made from fungi are becoming more widely accepted for their long-standing role in traditional medicine. Whether targeting gut health, cognitive function, or immune response, mushrooms are proving their value in modern wellness practices.
